Established on 1 January 1962, the University of Malaya is a comprehensive university of arts and sciences and medicine. It is one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Malaysia and the oldest institution of learning in the country. Its predecessors were Kolej King Edward VII, founded in 1905, and Kolej Raffles, founded in 1929. King Edward VII college is mainly for training medical talents, Raffles College is for training educational talents. Its qualifications and academic level are widely recognized around the world, and it is recognized as one of the premier universities in Malaysia. The current honorary rector is The Sultan of Perak, the former Supreme Head of state of Malaysia, Azlan Shah, and the current rector is Dr Abdullah Sanusi Ahmad. The University of Malaya is the only university in Malaysia that is a member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) and has extensive links with renowned Universities both at home and abroad. The University of Malaya was ranked 46th in The Times Asia University Rankings 2018 released in February 2018.
